Exhibits Technician

About the Role

This role demands a technical-minded individual who has a passion for tinkering and taking apart objects to repair and make them better than they were before. This role will be responsible for the maintenance of hardware, software, technology and fabrication of structures and kiosks within the museum exhibits. This position will require a considerable understanding of the use of RFID and electronics. The ideal candidate may possess a mechanical engineering license/degree or equivalent experience, but not required for all positions being hired under this title. Ability to communicate in English and Spanish a plus.

• Have skills including cabinetry/woodworking, metal working/welding, plumbing, electronics/electrical, plastic fabrication.
• Have extreme attention to detail and commitment to visual aesthetics.
• Can utilize excellent organizational and time management skills to manage multiple tasks accurately and effectively.
• Have basic proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Have experience managing budgets, projects, and facilities fabrication shops.
• Have experience working with outside vendors/contractors and fabrication firms.
• Have strong problem-solving skills.
• Can remain calm and respectful in stressful or challenging situations.
• Have a Valid Class “C” Texas or other state Driver’s license or a willingness to get one within 12 months.
• Have reliable transportation.
• Are working towards a mechanical engineering degree, within twelve (12) months from graduation and/or licensure.
• Can communicate at a proficient level both verbally and in writing in the English language.

Essential Functions:

• Leads daily exhibit inspections to assess safety, functionality, and cleanliness.
• Conducts daily, weekly, and monthly preventative maintenance.
• Repairs exhibits and galleries.
• Maintains workshop and warehouse cleanliness, organization, and safety.
• Adhere to and refine schedule for preventative maintenance of La Nube workshop, warehouse, equipment, and vehicles.
• Assist in the creation and maintenance of the annual budget.
• Assist in the ongoing supervision of exhibits and workshop related expenses.
• Fulfilling staff work order requests for making accommodations for galleries, facility spaces, and exhibits for special events or programs.
• Coordinates transportation of materials and equipment for special programs/donations, as necessary.
• Assists in daily checks of facilities to assess and conduct repairs and maintenance, as needed.
• Assists in technical design, engineering, fabrication and refurbishment of galleries, exhibitions, and individual exhibits as guide by the Vice President of Exhibits & Facilities.
• Attends all necessary meetings both departmentally and organizationally, as applicable.
• Schedule and availability reflect the organization is a 7-day-a week operation.
• Periodically required to work outside of standard working hours.
• Actively practice OSHA and La Nube’s health and safety protocols.
• Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements/Occupational Hazard

This position is highly active. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:

• Observe and react to the needs of guests, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
• Move throughout the museum.
• Manipulate, lift and/or move materials weighing up to 80 pounds.
• Frequent bending/stooping, kneeling, reaching, and laying down on hard surfaces.
• Occasional need to move and utilize single or two-person lifts and forklifts.
• Communicate and respond to safety hazards.
• Occasional work in outdoor elements (may consist of harsh heat or cold).
• Occasional walking on uneven surfaces.
• Occasional need to work over 6 feet high; climb ladders; use scissor lifts, etc.
• Potential exposure to low voltage electricity while completing preventative maintenance.
• Occasional exposure to leaning edges and glass barriers.
• Occasional need to enter confined spaces.
